Position Function Under the direction of the Captain, the Lieutenant assists in managing the day-to-day operations of the Fire Department, including supervising personnel, overseeing emergency response operations, ensuring regulatory compliance, and maintaining equipment readiness. The Lieutenant is responsible for delivering outstanding service in fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical activities while supporting personnel development and resource management. Essential Duties * Maintains the ability to perform and may perform duties of a Firefighter, EMT/Paramedic, and Driver Engineer as operationally required. * Supervises assigned personnel in daily station activities, emergency responses, and public education programs. * Assists with ensuring compliance with department policies, procedures, and training requirements. * Conducts and assists with fire inspections, investigations, and pre-incident planning. * Maintains station equipment, apparatus, and facility readiness through inspections, maintenance scheduling, and reporting. * Assists with personnel training, coaching, performance reviews, and mentoring new personnel. * Oversees the accurate completion of incident reports, training records, and other required documentation. * Assumes incident command responsibilities in accordance with department policy until relieved by a higher-ranking officer. * Performs additional duties as assigned. Environment Work is performed in an office, station, and hazardous emergency environments with exposure to extreme weather, fire, smoke, hazardous materials, unstable structures, and infectious diseases. Exposure risk to traumatic or thermal injuries is possible; infectious disease; grotesque sights and smells associated with major trauma, burn victims, and death; loud noises; confined spaces; heights; chaotic situations; and chemical and electrical hazards. Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: * High School Diploma or GED. * State of Florida Firefighter II Certificate of Compliance. * State of Florida Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) License/Certification. * State of Florida Pump Operator Certificate of Competency. * 45 Hour Aerial Operations Course * State of Florida Fire Officer I Certificate of Competency. * Minimum four (4) years of full-time firefighting experience. * Strong oral and written communication skills. * Ability to lead and supervise personnel under emergency and routine conditions. * Skilled in firefighting, emergency medical services, rescue operations, fire prevention, and inspections. * Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and standards. * Ability to lift and carry up to 150 pounds and operate firefighting equipment. Longevity Bonus: Longevity bonuses shall be paid to employees as follows: 5 but less than 10 years service 2% bonus 10 but less than 15 years service 4% bonus 15 but less than 20 years service 6% bonus 20 but less than 25 years service 8% bonus 25 or more years 10% bonus Following completion of five (5) years of continuous full time service by October 1 of any year and continuing in subsequent years of such service, each employee shall receive annual longevity payments as provided in the schedule. Payments to employees who become eligible by October 1 of any year shall be due the subsequent December 1. No longevity payment as above scheduled shall be made for that portion of an employee's regular salary or wage which is in excess of the negotiated maximum base wage, which is currently $25,000.00. Vacation: A new employee shall be credited with 80 hours vacation available for use after the completion of one (1) year of service. In subsequent years two (2) years through five (5) years of service, employees receive 80 hours vacation, with a maximum accumulation of 240 hours per pay period. The maximum accumulation increase correlates with the increase in vacation accrual. After five years of service, employees will receive an additional eight (8) hours vacation for each year of additional full-time service, not to exceed a maximum vacation leave of 160 hours accrued in any given year, with a rolling cap of 400 hours per pay period. *For explanation of separation payment see page 6. Sick Leave: Employees shall be credited with 3.7 hours of sick leave each pay ending (approximately (1) one day per month), no maximum accumulation. Employees may use sick leave for absences due to his/her illness or injury, including pregnancy, or an illness or injury in his/her immediate family. No sick leave credit shall be accrued by an employee during an unpaid leave of absence. Upon separation from the City, employees shall be paid 50% of accrued sick leave up to a maximum of 680 hours paid except in cases when fraud, theft, or embezzlement has resulted in discharge. *For explanation of separation payment see page 6. An employee who has accumulated 60 days of sick shall have the option at the end of the calendar year to relinquish and receive a reimbursement for up to the first four unused sick leave days accrued that year over 60 days. Topeka Metropolitan Area 2026-04-06 Position Overview The General Maintenance Repair Tech Senior – Fire Extinguisher Technician is responsible for independently or in a lead capacity performing a wide variety of maintenance and emergency repair tasks to University buildings, including physical structure, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. A key responsibility of this position is managing the campus-wide fire extinguisher inspection and maintenance program to ensure all extinguishers meet compliance standards and are fully operational. This role includes participating in a regular program of inspection and repair of university extinguishers across campus. This position requires operation of University vehicles. Job Description 50% – Maintenance, Fire Extinguisher Program, and Lead Support: Provide lead support for the campus fire extinguisher program, including troubleshooting, inspection, repair, replacement, and preventative maintenance of fire extinguishers as needed. Complete monthly inspections for buildings where inspections were not completed by supporting staff. Ensure all fire extinguishers are maintained in compliance with applicable safety regulations, fire codes, and university policies. Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation for inspections, maintenance activities, and device locations. Serve as a subject matter resource regarding fire extinguisher use and basic compliance requirements, providing guidance to campus partners as needed. Coordinate with custodial staff, maintenance teams, and other university stakeholders to address compliance concerns, support inspections, and plan corrective actions or maintenance activities. 40% – Emergency Response and system support: Respond to emergency calls involving equipment failures, alarms, or system disruptions. Assist with fire alarm inspections, basic troubleshooting, and minor repairs as time, training, and operational needs allow. Provide support for other life safety, electrical, or related systems as appropriate. Participate in the on-call rotation and respond to after-hours emergencies as required.
